As the second most populated city in morocco, Fes is considered to be the scientific and spiritual capital of the country and one of the most ancient cities in the world,
It has been founded 1230 years ago by IDRiSS the second , the city is divided to three smaller cities the ancient one , the new fes ( FES JDID ) which has been created in the thirteenth century AD , and the newest of them all built by the French colonizer .
As you walk through those small alleys of the ancient city it’s like you’re travelling back in time ,to when the simple, yet so unique way of life dominated , with all the bazaars , local restaurants and baken ovens all around the alleys , you can just take a seat at one of
the ancient cafes , and enjoy your Moroccan spiritual tea and the smell of baked bread in the air .
Fes is known for its many historical features, that indicates its civilization through the Islamic ages
And one of the best remain historical monuments the great wall with all of its big eight doors with its magnificent arches and reliefs and prominent perforations above it ,which date back to the reign of Mrenin . and in the other side of the wall it is hard not to notice ten thousand original buildings, its four thousand fountains and of course el quaraouiyine mosque which has been founded just fifty –one years after the foundation of the city .the mosque and the scientific university attached to it have remained a center of intellectual, cultural and religious activity for nearly a thousand years, the university is considered to be the second most ancient cultural university in the new age.
The choice of selecting Fes as a capital of the Islamic culture was not random, festivals, religious festivals and very other activities in various colors of creativity are hosted in the city all year.
When it comes to the weather Fes is located near the Atlas Mountains, it is distinguished by its Mediterranean climate, which is associated with a strong continental climatic effect, as the climate changes from relatively cold temperatures and rainy weather during winter to become dry and hot during the summer months from June to September.
